The autumn musings of a winter hater

The autumn musings of a winter hater

I love the colours of Autumn and the sometimes mild, blue sky days, but there’s always that creeping feeling that winter will soon be here and the tropical girl that I am CAN NOT handle the dark (or cold)! I try my best to channel the hygge and the three years I spent in Denmark definitely helped this, but I can’t shake the impending doom feeling that darkness brings to me.

So, this year, like every year, I’m steeling myself and heaving my winter layers down from the attic, because being outside as much as possible is a non-negotiable for me, my brain, and my dog. At the same time, I do all I can to bring nature inside, I lovingly nurture my many plants, I ensure that when inside, my eye can easily fall upon some nature inspired artwork and, of course, I draw and paint as much nature as I can.

Which brings me to my bigger point, environment is everything. There are numerous studies that show certain colours boost mood, that plants bring calm and that surrounding yourself with art fosters creativity and expression. So, even if you don’t think of yourself as having much of an interest in art or interiors, do yourself a favour and go find something you like looking at, and put it up in your home.

Rose Owen's gorgeous floral prints and wall art are a good place to start.

Once you have beautiful things up on your walls, you’ll get into it and you can thank me later. I’ll be sitting in the corner, wrapped in a wool blanket, staring at my painting of a palm tree.
