Gift guide for artists and other creative types

So, you have an arty friend or family member and you’d like to get them a great gift, but it’s SO tough because art is obviously subjective and artists usually have their own set of tools and brands that they prefer. 

Well, I’ve taken a stab at a list of things that I think most artists or creative-leaning people would enjoy as gifts, so hopefully it may be of some help or inspiration:

• Art passes; what a joy this is as a gift. It’s the kind of thing that’s a real luxury so you wouldn’t get it for yourself but it’s such a lovely, thoughtful and useful thing to get from someone else! If you’re near London then the Tate Modern is always a good shout. Or there’s the National Art Pass that covers a lot places over the UK.

• Memberships like the National Trust, and Royal Palaces are always good and serve as great days out for inspiration when the artists block inevitably comes!

• Things for art on the go: there are some lovely little paint sets that you can get, like this one from Tobio. Moleskin sketchbooks are always a winner, as are sets of Pigma Micron pens, if your artist likes drawing.

• A course, class or workshop in something different to their normal practice: there are some amazing things you can do, from tufting and ceramics, to woodworking and letterpress, there’s a class for everything and if the person is creative then doing something different is always fun. Plus, you get to do it with them, if you want!

• When in doubt, a plant!

And let’s not forget, that the greatest gift for an artist is to sell their work, and they probably hate promoting it (projecting much?!) so please, do spread the word about artists that you love, commission them (or me!), support them. Good god we need it!
